Driven By Data

July 13, 2023

Data has become an integral part of the motorsport industry, playing a crucial role in driving success on the track. For many decades, teams and drivers have relied on data insights to gain a competitive edge. Whether it’s analyzing engine performance, tire wear, aerodynamics, or driver behavior, the wealth of data collected allows teams to make informed decisions and fine-tune their strategies.

By harnessing this information, teams can optimize their car setups, improve lap times, and enhance overall performance.

From telemetry data to advanced analytics, the world of motorsport has embraced the power of data, making it an invaluable asset in the pursuit of victory.

Using comparison data helps our drivers to improve their driving and be more successful

There are many software and hardware solutions on the market to allow the data to be gathered and visualised. These work for Synthetic Racing and for One-track racing. There are very few solutions that allow the data to be visualised on a common platform across both disciplines and also provide Live telemetry data access.

RAF eMotorsports alongside their on-track colleagues at RAF Motor Racing have been looking into a solution that will allow them to cross the disciplines using intelligent data insights. This will enable coherent training and a build up experience whether the data comes from an on-track session or is generated in a synthetic simulation.

Building on an existing relationship between the MOD and Splunk >, we looked to see if this service could fill the void of what we wanted to achieve.

Provided with free training and additional coaching from a Splunk Solutions Engineer, I set about building a prototype solution.

Initially utilising data from our main Simulator software iRacing, I tried to understand how the data was formatted, and how to get it into a remote server for analysis. Pulling on experience and training from the jHub Defence Coding Scheme I was able to write a python program to gather the data from the driver computer and feed into an Amazon datastack running an Instance of Splunk.

What is Splunk >

Splunk is not only a valuable tool for analyzing general data but also provides immense value in the field of motorsports. With its exceptional data-driven capabilities, Splunk enables motorsports teams and organizations to unlock insights from the vast amount of data generated during races, practices, and simulations. From analyzing telemetry data to monitoring vehicle performance and identifying areas for improvement, Splunk empowers teams to make data-driven decisions that can enhance performance and optimize strategies both on and off the track. By collecting and analyzing data on vehicle sensors, driver inputs, and environmental factors, Splunk can help teams gain a competitive edge by improving aerodynamics, fuel efficiency, tire management, and other critical aspects of racing. Through its real-time monitoring, analysis, and visualization features, Splunk provides motorsports teams with valuable insights that enable them to maximize their performance, make informed decisions, and ultimately achieve success in this high-octane sport.
